Modern West Floral Company is a seasonal floral design studio and farm based in Carbondale, CO. Using only American grown flowers, with an emphasis on sourcing as much as possible from our own farm and other organic, sustainable Colorado growers, Modern West Floral Co. provides fresh cut blooms and botanicals for businesses, private residences, weddings and events. Fresh cut florals are available seasonally from May-October.

Modern West Floral Company is proud to commit to supporting local Colorado growers in order to provide the most fresh and sustainably sourced materials possible. We hope to convey our passion for plants and all of their beauty through our arrangements tailored uniquely for you.

The beauty and simplicity of the Colorado mountain west landscape inspires us. Here we are surrounded by striking silhouettes, mountain skylines, and flora that works hard at making a living in our intensely hot summers and frosty, snowy winters. At Modern West Floral Company, we are here to showcase that striking beauty, not hide it with flowers that have the luxury of growing on the other side of our Earth in the tropics.

We are here to create an alternative for the mountain dweller or visitor that appreciates the beauty, emotion, and happiness that floral design can bring to a space. Our alternative brings sustainably and locally grown flowers, a keen eye for design, an appreciation for the beauty of each flower, petal and leaf, and knowledge of our native landscape that we would like to highlight for you during your event, celebration, gathering, or in your home. We like to think of ourselves as floral architects. Let us design your floral-scape and incorporate the natural beauty of our landscape into your vision. After all, you chose the Rocky Mountains for a reason, no? Let us help you highlight the reason you are here.

We can't wait to help bring the western landscape into your Colorado mountain home or event.

Vanessa is co-founder of Modern West Floral Company. With a background in landscape architecture and design she moved to Colorado's western slope in 2012 to gain experience growing food and managing livestock. She spent 3 years at Sustainable Settings Ranch, 2 of which she managed the market garden and small CSA. She returned to her landscape architecture background and was brought on as a landscape designer at DHM Design. With a background in native plants of the western slope she wanted a way to showcase the beauty of the natural landscape and use her design background. In late 2015 she co-founded Modern West Floral company with the hopes of increasing people's awareness of sustainable flowers and the native plants of the Roaring Fork Valley.

Tara's interest in design and plants grew from her love of the Colorado landscape. Being a native of the east, where the flora is lush and wooded, the Colorado landscape at first felt to her a stark place. The starkness must have grown on her, as she soon came to admire the striking silhouettes of the mountains, the beautiful simplicity of a single twisted bristlecone sitting atop a windy ridge. The vegetation here demands more appreciation as it requires a certain resiliency and adeptness for survival. The flowers and plants that come of this landscape show their efforts in their beauty, and Tara truly believes that each flower, leaf and branch can be appreciated just as much on its own in the landscape as it can in a beautiful bouquet. With a Master's degree in Landscape Architecture and years of experience in the landscape design world in the Colorado mountains, Tara is thrilled to bring her knowledge of native plants and site and detail design into the world of florals. She believes that we have an amazing resource within reach that gets overlooked in the traditional floral industry. Colorado is known for its landscape, so why would we not take advantage of the opportunity to both create a more sustainable floral industry, and bring that aesthetic into our events, home, and lifestyle? To her it just makes sense, and that's how Modern West Floral Company was born in partnership with Vanessa.

Since its inception, one of Modern West Floral Company's primary goals has been to create a flower farm that would produce enough to supply not only our own clients, but to be a supplier for the the entire Roaring Fork Valley where we live and operate the MWFC design studio. Before our first spring even began, we were offered the opportunity to test our growing potential on a property just outside of downtown Carbondale. During the summer of 2016, despite our miniature test garden size, we managed to prove to ourselves, our clients, and our community that growing locally is absolutely worth the sweat and stress. No flower shipped across the country or even the state can compare to a flower grown organically with care and attention, harvested just in time, and conditioned just right. There is so much goodness in the landscape around us that goes un-noticed, we wondered what is the point of ordering flowers and fillers that are in season in some other part of the country? We'll always choose foraging and harvesting from our own resources to create beauty that actually suits, and doesn't harm, our environment. Since that first trial season we have expanded our garden area by 4x it's initial size, and we have lots of plans for expansion over the coming years. The 2017 season gave us an opportunity to test many over a hundred new flower varieties, expand our perennial flower and foliage garden, and prove yet again that locally grown flowers are 100% worth the effort.
